Region Skåne has eight hospitals where radiologists are working toward one central enterprise imaging system with a PACS and VNA managing production of approximately one million radiology exams per year. Employees who are required to work from home may need to receive allowances for internet service or physical equipment needed to perform their jobs, such as computers, printers and telephones. Just because employees were not entitled to an allowance or work equipment under a permissive remote working policy does not mean the same approach can be taken when mandating remote work. Employees could even be entitled to additional money to compensate them for the employer's use of part of their home for a home office. Can Radiologists Work from Home?
I have my laptop connected to two larger external monitors and use the laptop screen for worklists and patient information. This gives me the same three-screen setup as I have at the hospital, so display protocols will work exactly the same. So far, no radiologists here have been reassigned to take direct care of COVID-19 patients, as we have seen, for example, in Italy. Some of my colleagues still have to work at the hospitals, but they have taken several actions to minimize the risk of being infected.

It allows us to create groups so we can share and discuss cases, to see where everyone is physically located, and if they are active or offline. It has proven particularly beneficial in these special times—so beneficial, in fact, that even the technologists and radiology nurses now have started to use the chat functionality. In fact, they tend to work more than if they work in a medical or imaging center.
These physicians gain from the perspective of more productivity, independence, and better work-life balance. However, many of the same advantages of radiologists working from home can couple as disadvantages. Mandatory remote work may be preferred by employers and employees under certain circumstances. Even where remote work arrangements serve the interests of both parties, employers must be careful not to hastily implement a mandatory remote working policy. Before any final decisions, employers should fully understand the process for implementing mandatory remote work in each jurisdiction and its implications on managing their human capital. Rather than focusing on the purpose of the benefit, employers should instead look at the legal basis for providing the benefit to employees.

Though some consumer displays feature similar specs compared to medical displays, they are not fit for home reading. According to the ACR-AAPM-SIIM Technical Standard for Electronic Practice of Medical Imaging, a display used for medical imaging should have a luminance of at least 350 cd/m² 1. My workstation is connected to the central system via a secure VPN tunnel administered by Region Skåne. The Internet I use is a regular home fiber connection, with a 100 Mbps download speed and 10 Mbps upload speed. This set-up works very well for me, and my review performance is as good as it is onsite at the hospital. In February this year, we started with a PACS-driven workflow, which considerably facilitates the review since there is no RIS that I need to log into anymore. In addition, speech recognition is completely integrated into the PACS, which makes it very convenient to dictate.
